Diazepam is a prescription drug intended for anxiety relief, as well as muscle spasms and control of agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. Diazepam has been reported to form habit in some people, which means you may not be able to stop the treatment suddenly without getting unpleasant health effects. You may also develop tolerance and will not benefit from your treatment anymore. The following withdrawal symptoms are possible: anxiousness, sleeplessness and irritability. You will need to take less and less of diazepam every day to avoid the symptoms mentioned. Side effects are common and can include any of the following symptoms: constipation, weakness, tiredness, nausea, dry mouth, changes in appetite, changes in sex drive, drowsiness, diarrhea, frequent urination, and dizziness. Those side effects are not considered serious and do not need to be reported to your health care provider unless they get bothersome and prevent you from enjoying a normal life. More serious side effects include seizures, persistent, fine tremor or inability to sit still, difficulty breathing or swallowing, jaundice, fever, severe skin rash, shuffling walk, or irregular heartbeat and need to be reported right away.
